SAN JUAN ISLANDS, WASHINGTON

The San Juan Islands are located in the Puget Sound between Seattle and British Columbia. A number of fine beaches are available for CO use on many of the islands. San Juan Island has nice beaches from South Beach to Eagle Cove. See also the write-up on Doe Bay for another nice area.

DIRECTIONS: From Seattle, take any of the many ferry boats to the islands. Assuming you are going to San Juan Island, you will land at Friday Harbor. From there, go up the hill on the main street a few blocks to where the road forks. Take the left fork, Cattle Point Road, to the southern end of the island. Go past a turnoff for the visitor information center and continue about a couple of miles to the turnoff for South Beach. Take a right turn onto Pickett road and that will take you to the parking lot. Park in the lot and walk west to your pick of small coves.

Dear Moon,

A note about the directions; when you take Cattle Point road to the southern end of the island, you'll go past a turnoff for the visitor information center and continue about a couple of miles to the turnoff for South Beach. That right turn is onto Pickett road and that will take you to the parking lot. One other thing, the small coves mentioned are to the west, not the east from the South Beach parking lot. (As you face the Straits standing in the parking lot, turn right.) Also, the ferry was a zoo so the 7 miles or so could be made on bike from Friday Harbor to the beach. Not a lot of people, mostly beach combers - it is still early, though.
