Cooper Point is located on the Olympic Penisula near the Evergreen State College campus. The pebble beach is popular with the local college crowd.
DIRECTIONS: From Seattle, take I-5 to Route 101 and then to the Evergreen State College campus. Find Cooper Point Drive, follow it to Driftwood and park in parking lot F, about 3/4 of a mile from campus. Nature trails start at the rear of the lot. Pick one and keep following the right hand forks in the trail until you get to the pebble beach.

Subject: Evergreen Beach Arrest Updates
Date: Thu, 3 Aug 2000
From: Skizix1@aol.com
After the Sunday, July 31st arrests at Evergreen Beach for what they called Indecent Exposure, three of the 8 showed up at the court hearing on Wednesday, August 2nd. They really tried to pull us in as soon as they could so we could not get any information together.
The arresting officers lied in their report, saying there was a child within viewable distance from where we were sitting on the sandy beach area. That is a lie, but we could not get that thru the court. It seems the only complaint, according to Huntsburger, security Director at Evergreen, was from days prior. That, of course came from the resident to the south of the beach, who illegally cuts firewood off of Evergreen beach, and does not want anyone to see him doing so. He also has nets & crab pots out, which I think is also against the law, but he is winning this so far.
The courts even had a plea bargain set aside for us, pre determined at a very high price. Either pay a $250 fine & defer sentence for one year, or pay a $1,500 & go to jail. Atleast that was my deal. This was my first offense, ever. One man had a prior & his bail was higher. $2,500 I think. According to the Washington State statutes this was way out of line but I was too weak to carry it further. The State recommended a $50 fine 1st offense & $150 second, then $1000 3rd.
I spoke with Mark Storey up north and he suggested just paying the fine and walk. So I did. My options were very limited, as was the time it would take to hire an attorney & get all the legal stuff going. I can not afford that. I am underpaid & over worked as it is.
Most landed clubs have on-going activities but I work week nights all night and have limited time to do any of those things & had hoped to be able to have a safe haven locally but now that is gone. The Columbia River is too far for most people to casually visit, but I guess that is the next destination.
This was just to let you know any prior information is now old news and that the hearing sucked. Not in our favor, for sure.
Sorry to bother you but it is all useful to network and keep each other informed on what is happening locally & regionally.
Take care,
James McKinzie

Subject: Evergreen beach warning, again....
Date: Sun, 30 Jul 2000
From: Skizix1@aol.com
Just a word of warning to members or perspective members, I was ticketed today, at Evergreen State College Campus Beach. Complete with a court date set for Wednesday, August 2nd at 8:30am.
I know two years ago we had a go round with these guys, but now they seem even more determined to run everyone off the beach.
I was sleeping on my towel along with 10 others sitting nearby me. 6 of them walked up the trail as soon as the officers started to write me a ticket. Which makes me the subject of Selective prosecution, & invidious discrimination.
I was naked but covered with a towel as soon as I saw the officers approaching, so they did not see more than my butt.
Isn't Indecent Exposure an exposure with abominable intent or sexual display? The human body of course is not Indecent so I objected to the terms used on my ticket.
I was born a nudist, will continue top live as one and will die as one, and I am incensed that they have the ability to do this to me. To make me go to court in front of a religious do-gooder and plead my case for freedom of speech & expression, as well as Freedom of association. My first Amendment rights have been violated. Plus, they had guns and that made me very nervous. Aren't they supposed to only wear those if they are in pursuit of a known felon?
Obviously I am upset. Angry and in fear of my job, by social status, and my career. This will obviously be in the papers because they even said they want the publicity. Maybe it will curtail any further nude activity at their beach. Not our tax paid beach, but their own beach. Hmm.
I don't make enough money to hire an attorney. I am an underpaid servant of the radio waves. I can't use a public defender because I see they always stand firm to plead guilty so they get paid & move on. I am guilty of nothing. If anyone has any known info that might help me I sure would appreciate it. I cannot go this alone at this point of my life. I am a little nervous but I know they threw the cases out last time on lack of jurisdiction and unlawful pursuit of prior restraint. The complaints are coming from the man at the South end of the beach who is cutting firewood illegally from the beach area, and does not want anyone to report him from the beach. Naked or otherwise, but he has found a reason to call campus police everytime.
Help if you can guys. I know it is asking a lot but I am sure you have heard all of this before.

Subject: WARNING WARNING ARRESTS AT EVERGREEN BEACH
Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998
-WARNING- The POLICE have been arresting people for indecent exposure at Evergreen Beach as of July 25,1998.You should take Evergreen beach off the List of NUDE beaches.
From: Nkdcub1@aol.com
Date: Thu, 9 Jul 1998
In Olympia, 12 people were cited for public nudity this last Wednesday. Each citation
was for $250, and the comments made were that they, the police, were ending nudity in
public on public lands & college campus beaches. We were at Evergreen State College
Beach. The county and the campus security Police were in on the bust and came out of no
where to arrest and cite every beach goer. We had planned a Beach party clean up on
Saturday which has been planned for months. We are going anyway, clothed.
Alert your group as to the closure of the beach.
Sincere thanks,

I used to go to Cooper Point when I was a student at the Evergreen State College. Technically, it is only for the use of students, faculty, and staff, so I no longer go there. In general, there are mostly men present. My experience was different from the person who posted on your website; in the main area, near the lagoon, I felt safe, but I soon learned not to go south, because there, gay men would try to pick up on me. There are an inordinate number of jet-skis and speed boats going by within sight of the beach, which are an annoyance. I was not there as recently as the one who was cited, so I do not know if this has become a regular practice.

Just thought I would let you know that this beach is evidently no longer naturist friendly. Was enjoying a day in the sun recently, and promptly given a citation by the police . I thought should let you know so no one else goes through this unpleasant experience.
NOTE: I wanted to share this info with you so you can pass it on, but please don't publish my name, I would prefer to remain anonymous.
Thank you very much, your postings are very much appreciated.

Greetings!
I have visited Cooper Point several times and found it to be a pleasent and subdued experience. The walk from the parking lot is lovely and the beach is adequate. The times that I have been there there were few people on the beach (ten at the most) and mostly men. All seemed content to be there and weren't picking up on each other or the few women that were there (this is a common problem at NW beaches it seems).
The beach is sand turning to sharp rocky bits the closer you get to the water so bring sandles for swimming. The water is Sound water so sometimes it's clean and sometimes gross; usually it's cleanest when the tide is going out.
Have fun! Paul.
