Collins Beach is located on Sauvie Island, OR. This rustic island extends north from the junction of the Willamette and the Columbia Rivers. It is bounded by the Multnomah Channel on the west and by the Columbia River on the east. Half of the 24,000 acre island is private property, mostly farmland. The other half is the Sauvie Island Wildlife Area managed by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW).
The purpose of the wildlife area is to preserve and develop habitat for wintering waterfowl and to provide public hunting and recreation. The area continues to serve those uses. In addition, it provides habitat for many species of fish and wildlife and GREAT recreational opportunities.
As you visit the wildlife area you will see signs that may restrict your activities. Prime use of the area is management of wildlife and its habitat. Please remember that the rules are to provide for proper wildlife management.
When you go to Sauvie you increase the beach use statistics that Fish and Wildlife keep. You count as 2.1 beach users even though you never leave the car or set foot on the beach.

[EDITOR'S NOTE:The following text was provided by FOSICOB]
Friends Of Sauvie Island Clothing-Optional Beach (FOSICOB) (pronounced Fozzie- Cobb or Fossie-Cobb) is a watchdog and occasional political action group. Although we focus on Collins Clothing-Optional Beach, we also monitor the two clothing-required beaches and the narrow fishing beach at Willow Bar.
FOSICOB is not a "club": we do not sponsor social activities, parties, or other nudist/naturist events. Although FOSICOB works closely with national, regional, and local nudist/naturist organizations, we are not formally affiliated with any of them.
FOSICOB seeks to ensure that Collins Beach continues as a legal, state- designated, clothing-optional beach. We also monitor the entire Sauvie Island beach area to ensure, for example, that:
sufficient portable toilets are provided, and kept clean, parking areas are properly maintained, police protection is vigorous, courteous, non-discriminatory, and even-handed, law enforcement is vigorous, courteous, non-discriminatory, and even- handed.
When all is well, were essentially dormant. If problems develop, we interact with appropriate agencies, other citizen groups, and the media. Agencies include the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) which manages the Sauvie Island Wildlife Area, and the three police units with jurisdiction on the island.
There are three beaches side-by-side along the Columbia River towards the north end of the island. As you enter the beach area from south to north, youll find: Walton Beach: designated clothing-required, about 1.15 miles long Collins Beach: designated clothing-optional, about 1.25 miles long North Unit Beach: designated clothing-required, about 3.25 miles long, to the north tip of the island
The Wildlife Area is open from 4:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily, all year. Overnight camping is NOT permitted on the beaches, or elsewhere. Cars left overnight in the parking lots will be towed.
About two-thirds of all Sauvie Island beach users choose the clothing-optional beach. Of these, about two-thirds choose to go nude. Many conventionally clothed families choose Collins Clothing-Optional Beach due to the especially good behavior there.
Clothed and unclothed beach users mingle without problems or comments. There are a few gawkers -- more when local farmers hire temporary help -- but serious misbehavior is rare.
Heterosexual and homosexual users also mingle without problems or comments. Many gays prefer the area north of Entrance #6, but theres no rule. Anyone is welcome anywhere on Collins Beach.
FOSICOB encourages the police to enforce Oregon law on Collins Beach, and elsewhere. For example, we support legitimate arrests for use or sale of illegal drugs, public drunkenness, drunk driving, public sexual activity, etc. Note that public sexual activity is against Oregon law whether performed alone or with someone else.
Collins Beach is state-designated as clothing-optional: nudity is legal, and the ambiance is eminently suitable for families. We wish to keep all of that unchanged.
Drive carefully, obey the speed laws, stay sober, act nice, have a wonderful time, and please pack out ALL your own trash. Please also pack out as much other trash as you can carry. Bending and stooping to pick up trash left by inconsiderate yahoos is great exercise, and is a great service to all.
Nudity is NOT appropriate in the parking lots or on the road. Do NOT undress in your car or in the parking lots: undress only after you reach the beach. Youll have passed a sign saying "Entering Clothing-Optional Area."
Do NOT exit to the road or parking lots while nude. Do NOT exit Collins Beach at the north or south boundaries while nude. When you see signs saying "Leaving Clothing-Optional Area", cover up or stop.
From Portland, follow Highway 30 (US-30) northwest towards Linnton, Scappoose, Saint Helens, and Astoria. About 10 miles from downtown Portland (a couple miles past Linnton) turn right onto the bridge over Multnomah Channel. This bridge is the only entrance to Sauvie Island. Its well marked.
At the far end (bottom) of the bridge, youll see the Cracker Barrel Store ahead on the left. Buy a one-day or full-year parking pass there. Parking passes are required in all Wildlife Area parking lots, including those near the beaches. The police do issue tickets.
Drive UNDER the bridge onto Gillihan Road. Follow Gillihan Road until it ends.
Turn right onto Reeder Road. Follow Reeder Road until it becomes gravel. (Youll have already passed the main part of Walton Beach, with parking area on the left and concrete steps on the right.)
About 1/4 mile after Reeder Road becomes gravel, youll see signs on the right: "Collins Beach, Clothing-Optional Area, Nudity on Beach Only." Five such signs identify the five trails onto Collins Clothing-Optional Beach. They're numbered as #2 through #6.
Park on the left, display your parking pass, and follow a trail to the beach.
Do NOT undress in your car or in the parking lots: undress only after you reach the beach. Nudity is NOT appropriate in the parking lots or on the road.
Do NOT exit Collins Beach at the north or south boundaries while nude. Do NOT exit to the road or parking lots while nude. When you see signs saying "Leaving Clothing-Optional Area", cover up or stop.
On your first visit, we recommend Entrance #6 at the junction of Gilbert River Road on the left. Entrance #6 takes you to the best and safest swimming area. Using Entrance #6 also makes exploration easy: Collins Beach extends about 0.6 miles in both directions from this point.

Mooncrow,

I have read about Collins Beach over the year and wanted to go to it but never had the
chance. Well this has all changed. I had to make a trip to southern Oregon, I live north
of Seattle on Whidbey Island, and made plans to visit on the way back. My brother and I,
who has never been nude in public, stopped by the beach on a day that was partly overcast,
but very warm and a light breeze was just moving the water. As we approached the beach, we
notice that there were alot of people on the beach in the vicinity of the volleyball
courts having just the time of their life. Most of them were nude. We walked a little ways
from the crowds and since I have been to Wreck Beach, Canada several times and feel
totally comfortable in the nude, didn't waste anytime getting nude, to the shock of my
brother. I guess that since I got nude so quick, he sort of did so slowly.
With all the other reports of gawkers around I didn't see any going on and I did walk
all over the place, talked to everybody that would talk to
me and had a good time. I have to make trips to southern Oregon in the near future and
this will be one of my regular stops. I recommend this to
anybody who dares to go bare.

Hi Carl,
I was just checking for information on Sauvie's COB and found your website. My wife and I
visited Sauvie's Island COB a few years ago and found it enjoyable. I even played some
volleyball with some of the regulars when they were down at Seaside Ore. for the
tournement last year.
I have a few questions if you have the time.
We plan on coming to Sauvie's in a couple of weeks, weather permitting. I would like to
bring our boat but I'm not sure where to launch from. Also what is the rules when it comes
to dogs on nude beaches? She's a black lab, loves to do nothing(and I mean nothing but...)
but chase a frisbee, ball, stick or whatever you want to throw. She'll do that all day
long. We also have a camper/truck combo. Is there camping anywhere close where we might
spend the night instead of driving too far to another area?
Thanks for any info.

Carl if you use this no email address please. Just thought the folks who go to Collins should know that some asshole has been snapping candid pictures and posting them on an Internet voyeur site. So, keep your eyes open and if you spot the idiot, do what you gotta do. Many of the posted pics clearly show faces.

Hello,
My wife and I went to Collins Beach for the first time today. I had found the beach through your web site and decided to try it out. It was our first time at a nude beach and I was a little nervous taking it all off. My wife(24) had no problem what so ever and was nude the second our towels were on the beach. I read some of the other reviews of the beach on your web site and most of what they said was true. As soon as we sat down in middle of the beach, within 10 minutes we were surrounded by nude single men, at least 6 within 15-20 feet. They faced our direction the whole day, but didn't bother us. My wife is a very attrractive woman and got a lot of looks. She wasn't bothered by this at all, and we had a great day. One thing that puzzled us was that single men keep going in and out of the woods behind the beach and many would stand behind the brush and stare. Finally we figured out what they were doing. Also, I had a question, I wanted to take some pics of my wife, but had heard that no cameras are allowed. I saw some others taking pics. Is ok to take pics of her next time? Thank you and great web site. Take care, Jason

Both my wife and I have been going to Collins Beach on Sauvie Island for a few years now and we enjoy it very much. Almost everyone there is very friendly and grown up about the way they conduct themselves, but as others have said before, there are a few "gawkers", but as long as they aren't obvious, and annoying, a very nice time can be had.
We did have one occaision where my wife and I took a friend down to the beach for the first time, and as my buddy and I were coming back from the water, we noticed a guy sitting in the wide open where he could look right up between my wifes legs, and was "taking care of himself". My friend and I circled around behind and surprised him, and assured him that was my wife, and that kind of behavior was not the norm around here. He became erratic saying it was a free world, and we decided it was time to take action into our own hands, as we did not have a peace-officer near by. Needless to say he was fed more than his share of "knuckle sandwich" and sent on his way.
Don't get me wrong though..........
I don't go down to the beach looking for fights, and the last thing we need is some vigilante running around like bat-man tryng to save all the good people of the beach. But, people that go there intending to make trouble should be fairly warned that the folks that are there to enjoy themselves at one of the best clothing optional beaches in the nation, will not tolerate rude, childish behavior and will try thier best to protect what they have so ALL of the fun won't be spoiled by the "rotten few"
This has been the only problem that has EVER come up, for us anyway, in the almost 3 years we've been going, and we plan to keep going back on every sunny day possible.
Hope to see you all there!

Carl,
The Collins Beach site report you added over the weekend is a tad inaccurate in that the buffer area did not grow.
You may add the following site report if you wish:
I checked the north boundary of Collins Beach this afternoon, May 7. A four-strand barbed wire fence now extends 425 feet south from the Mark/Powers property along the ordinary high water line, then west to the woods/wetlands.
Signs on the fence say "Entry beyond this sign prohibited." ODFW enclosed the _existing_ buffer area in barbed wire, and made it off limits all year - instead of off limits only from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. FOSICOB had proposed that way back in 1993. No beach has been lost - so far.
As for the rumored rumor of future police presence on the beach, I hope that happens over the full length of all three beaches - and especially near the north end of Collins Beach. FOSICOB has been pushing that idea since 1993 as the only means of keeping the property owners under control.

Today, 5/3, the Fish and Wildlife folk erected a barbed wire fence at the North Boundary of the CO beach, adjacent to the property owned by the folks who brought the lawsuit. This reduces the beach by less than 50 ft, which is insignificant. I suppose this should satisfy the judge, but who knows about the landowners? (they might still be able to see if they get better binoculars!) There is also a rumor that patrols might be started to ensure that nobody crosses the boundary.

On Aug 28th,both myself and my girlfriend decided to try Collins beach. We are both from Europe and are very comfortable being in the nude in public. We parked ourselves about 100yds north of the volleyball pit and staked out our spot, the beach was not too crowded. It wasn't long before 3-4 single men decided to sunbathe in our vicinity, probably due to the fact that my girlfriend is very attractive. It was interesting that they sat in the shade, and never laid down to sunbathe or even close their eyes. most were middle aged.
Being a couple and pretty open minded, we brushed this off, however, I can see how this would make any single females or a group of them very nervous. It was such a shame that this beach seemed to have such sexual overtones. One of the gawkers decided to "take care of himself" not 15 yards from us. Which saddened us. Why don't they just go to a strip club?
It won't prevent us from returning, but I wish these people could see the spiritual side of the place and leave the sex at home.

Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2000 From: kltrike (kltrike@ida.net) August 7th & 12th My wife and I visited Collins Beach August 8th of this year for a third time in two years. We enjoyed the stay while we were there for only three hours and the people were friendly, enjoying the sun and the beach. We had no problem with any gawkers or onlookers as a few did walk past, but that is to be expected in a public place where there is an opportunity to view the opposite sex (or same). We returned again the 12th and had a picnic on the beach, and enjoyed watching some local people play volleyball on the beach. There was a lot of people, single women, single men and groups of people everywhere and no one caused a scene to offended and person or child. There was a lot of children with their parents at the beach some with bathing suites and some totally nude. I and my wife really enjoyed a gentlemen body surfing with a kite on the Columbia River. Our plans in the future will include visiting the Island again in the years to come, mainly in the month of August, this we consider the best time. K & L |

Bright sunny day at Collins Beach. Plenty of deep sand and water warm enough to swim or wade in. About 600-800 or more on the beach during the day. Some stayed fully or partially clothed, but aboutt 90% were completely nude.
Greatest crowds were at pathways #2 and #3 at the volleyball area and just north of the volleyball area. Mostly small groups of 2-6 with a lot of singles laying out in the sun. Several boats moored near #2 area. Some were sunning nude on their boat, others were ashore chatting.
One couple next to me stood out because of their total lack of tan. The man was nude immediately but his wife stayed dressed for about an hour. Later she got down to her panties and a hat for a short while. It may have been their first attempt at naturism and they weren't too willing to talk. He did put some lotion on my back for me and we chatted for a minute. They only stayed about 2 hours.
Two couples and a teenage son set up on the other side and the boy and his dad tried out a wind surfer.
There were a few gawkers who looked like workers from the nearby farms. They caused no problems. Altogether, a very pleasant day. Quite, peaceful, and sunny. I will definitely return when the opportunity arises.

If you are looking for an unspoiled beach to explore naturism PLEASE read this!
Your directions were excellent. My girlfriend & I (26 & 36 yrs.) found the beach without any problem. Once we arrived we used entrance #6 as advised for first time visitors. We had driven 3.5 hours down from Seattle & were eager to get to the beach. We settled on a spot close to the water just east of entrance #6. After a few minutes I went for a swim leaving my girlfriend bathing on the beach. As I returned from my swim we both noticed that quite a few single men seemed to be lingering in & out of the trees & shrubs near us. It was just plain CREEPY! The frequency increased until we both felt uncomfortable enough to go for a stroll on the beach in hopes that it was just our imaginations & the "coincidence" would pass by the time we returned. After a nice 30 minute walk we returned. Much to our disappointment the "coincidence" had not passed. The proximity & frequency had escalated to 10-15 ft. away every 5 minutes. Very CREEPY! It should be noted that these were not gawkers, but typical looking nude beach goers. We have found that single men make up the majority of nude beach visitors & have grown quite accustomed to that fact. On this day, the entire length of the beach, there were roughly 6 women visiting in contrast to 50-60 men. No problem, as we are there to sunbathe in the nude, and nothing else. This M/F ratio has never caused either of us any concern. This past Tuesday, August, 15, 2000 changed that for us. Before our visit was over, we would vow never to return to Sauvie Island again.
This unusual "lurking in the bushes" & creepy behavior continued. Because none of these men were visibly gratifying themselves, there was no just cause in making a scene. Besides we didn't want to "flatter" ourselves in thinking that either of us could drive men to that level of Cro-Magnon behavior. We tried to just relax and enjoy the sun. After several hours of this & several diversionary walks on the beach we felt that if the "vibe" continued another minute we would just leave. Not 30 seconds later a man on the beach 100 ft. away, in his late 50's (old enough to know better) began gratifying himself in full view of dozens of other visitors. No one, I repeat NO ONE seemed to give a shit. Coincidentally 1 of the 6 females on the beach happened to be walking within 5 ft. of the sick fucker on her way to potty, presumably. He was in full swing when she returned minutes later. We didn't stick around to see if any of the dozen or so people within 30 feet of him ever did or said anything. We were packed & out of there in minutes.
We believe that we enjoy naturism for all of the right reasons. But, when we visit a beach in search of fulfilling those reasons, and wind up leaving with thoughts of beating the shit out of a dirty old pervert with a piece of driftwood, it really spoils the mood. For those of you who have visited, and will visit, Sauvie Island without incident, I wish you the best. I believe that these two naked souls will be searching for the naturist's dream elsewhere. Wreck Beach in Vancouver, B.C. & private landed clubs have never looked so good.
Love,
Rob

Thanks for your reviews and directions for Sauvie Island, OR clothing optional beach.
My fiancee and myself visited Sauvie Island on 2 occasions in August 1999.
We found the beach to be as stated. Unfortunately on the first occasion we arrived as the sun was leaving the beach (we had a late start for the drive) the 2nd occasion it was cloudy. Both times we were among the few on the beach.
Next year we will obtain a season pass earlier in the year and visit more frequently.

Just wanted to send my thanks to you for your excellent site regarding Collins Beach on Sauvie's Island. Just returned from a four week vacation in the Portland area and really appreciated your excellent directions to the beach. Would never have been able to find it without them. Went on June 13, 1999 and the weather was excellent. There was plenty of beach for all to enjoy. I visited all five sites. 1,2, 3, 5 and 6 were in good shape; 4 was pretty muddy and I would not recommend it.
People were all friendly, with the usual volleyball game and sunbathing. Would recommend the beach to all. I felt it was much better than the Rooster Rock clothing optional beach.
I'm currently living in Florida and I wish the officials here were as enlightened as in Oregon. We are constantly fighting them for permission to have a clothing optional beach at the Canaveral National Seashore near Titusville.
Thanks again for your site.

Absolutely the best beach around. I have been visiting CO beaches for years. Grew up in Calif and get upset with the "small" beaches in the NW. I drive several times a year to Wreck Beach in B.C. but get tired of people offering me marijuana and heroin. Not to mention those banging needles on the beach. I live just north of Seattle; and BC and Portland are equal distance. I visited Collins Beach the other day ( 04-13-99). What a GREAT beach. Deep and clean and simply wonderful. Sunny, I only saw maybe six people all day, in sight distance. The only suggestion, based on my own mental image after reading the directions to the beach, is to list the actual mileage in the directiions. I marked it off. From the channel bridge by Sams store to the intersection of Gilihan Rd. and Reeder road, is five miles. Once one turns onto Reeder road it is another seven miles. Thats all, an absolutely wonderful experience. For years I have been looking for a women to date who was CO desirable. Not to get selfish here , but it is like going to a singles dance for parents without partners. An activity you share with others who also are single. Hopefully this summer when I am down at Sauvie, there will be many people to meet. I just get a good feeling about the Island. Not to mention, ACTUAL SAND instead of rock, great beach. People of my kind, it is a wonderful thing.

The spring of '97 was certainly difficult for those of us who visited Sauvie Island during the early runoff. But I took inspiration from the few hardy folk who saw the high water as an opportunity to become more familiar with the topology of Collins Beach. We can only hope for a more normal runoff pattern this year.
I have visited this CO beach off and on since the late 80's. I remember when parking was extremely difficult and portable toilets were nowhere to be seen. Kudos to all the people who helped make a visit to Collins Beach a pleasant experience.
Rarely have I had a bad experience. A couple of growling dogs, one loud boombox and the inevitable gawkers just about fill up the 'negative' category. All of us who behave in a civilized, considerate manner play an essential role in keeping this beach open to clothing-free use.

Visited Sauvie Island on August 28th, 1997. Weather was cloudy with occasional showers, but very light. Got my parking permit and found the beach. (Pic attached.) Main complaint: The flies!!! Constant shooing and swishing with my shorts. A pair of guys who were there didn't even bother to lie down - they just stood up with their shorts in their hands and swished at the flies in a constant motion.
Water was warm enough to swim, which I did. Boat traffic up the Columbia River wasn't heavy, and the nude sunbathers seemed to attract no attention.

I visited Collins beach on the 21st and 22nd of July. I cannot be certain, but one of those days was overcast in the morning, and the other was sunny and hot! A few hardcore naturists were in attendance on the cool overcast day, but on the sunny and warm day the beach was humming with activity.
I had the pleasure of being near a couple of guys who were fishing and having a good time, and one of the gentlemen would burst out in a joyful voice that he just loved to be naked...haha . So everyone was having a blast. A wonderful introduction for me to the nudist lifestyle that I always believed in and never seemed to take the time to enjoy! The only problem I encountered was the loose sand under water that was almost like stepping in quicksand. If you take the kiddies, keep an eye out so they don't become mired in the underwater sand because if a big boat would happen by, the wake would be enough to put them underwater if the were to get stuck in the muck. All in all, it was a relaxing 2 days and I am glad I finally discovered Sauvie's Island!

As I did last year on this very same weekend, I made a point to get to Sauvie Island Clothing-Optional Beach, also known as Collins Beach.
When I tried visiting this beach a few weeks ago, the beach was almost completely under water, with dry sand accessible only after wading in waist deep and traveling a short distance in less-than-clear water. I posted a trip report which drew an excellent response from
After that trip report, I received some helpful information from in reply in determining when the beach is accessible. Check the official water level for the Columbia River measured at Vancouver. When I last visited, the level was about 18 feet. This weekend, it was 9 feet. At 18 feet, it was underwater. At 9 feet, there was plenty of dry sand for everyone. These levels are reported in tables on the weather page of The Oregonian newspaper, and also at: http://nimbo.wrh.noaa.gov/Portland/afos/PDXRVSPDX [obsolete URL] on the WWW. Remember as you read these tables that you are looking for the level for the Columbia River at Vancouver.
The water was cool but not too cold. My daughters and I made a game of throwing the frisbee further into the water each time to draw the other players in deeper and deeper. Large ships traversing the river occasionally created just a hint of surf. The balance was 60% male and 40% female. My older daughter, a 16 year old teenager typically not quite comfortable with nudism herself, is becoming more and more comfortable there, a sign perhaps that the beach crowd is a healthy and well-behaved mix of singles, couples and families.
I have gotten to get to know a couple of the old-timers better. "Wolfgang" and his wife, "Sally", have been there every single time I have. They must practically live there. They both have skin like basketballs. Theyve been quietly helpful to me in the past and take a great deal of paternal ownership over our beach there. They both appear to be in their 60s, a bit heavy, and he speaks with a heavy German accent. If you see them, youll know them. Say "hi."
There was a bit of an altercation as we were leaving when a newbie decided to display his affection and erection toward an unaccompanied female who was minding her own business. The old-timers saw what was going on and interrupted him. He became more and more agitated and what was a confrontation turned into an argument and was about to go to fists. As more nudists responded to the situation, the newbie decided he was outnumbered, got dressed, and left protesting all the way down the trail. I have a theory about such confrontations that females probably do a much better job than males do in shutting down these guys when they parade their erection. The guy became more and more aggressive and defensive when another guy was telling him that his public lewdness was inappropriate, but he was clearly off-balance when he was being addressed by the female old-timer on the subject. The males did help by their silent presence, and by refusing to be drawn into the confrontation despite his fighting words. The object of his affection also helped when she asked, "why dont you just leave, nobody wants you here?" Since Ive only witnessed this happen one other time before, at San Onofre, I dont have much to go on. But if it happens again, I think Ill just show up and keep my mouth shut, let the female(s) handle the words, and let the guy calm down and realize he was wrong or leave. Any experience here, regulars? This is very unusual for this particular beach. Another Sauvie Island regular told me hes never seen something like that in the 15 years that he has been visiting Collins Beach.

My wife, Deej, and I made MANY, MANY visits to Collins Beach on Sauvie Island in the mid 1990's. Collins Beach is still our favorite CO spot in the entire NorthWest. You have about 1.2 miles of beautiful sandy CO beach, with the majestic Columbia River on one side of you and a narrow strip of forest on the other side. There is a network of hiking trails all the wildlife area. NOTE: When you leave the Collins Beach area, put your clothes back on! The single biggest problem is keeping nude people off the road and out of the parking areas. Please respect the textile residents & textile visitors. There are porta-potties and horse mounted Oregon Park Ranger patrols. The local naturist activist group, FOSICOB, works closely with local residents and authorities to assure the continued availability of the CO beaches. The people on the beach are friendly and sociable. There is almost always at least one volleyball game going as well as bocce ball and horseshoes. Boats come in and moor in the shallow waters as well. Deej and I highly recommend Collins Beach on Sauvie Island.
