ROOSTER ROCK, OREGON

Rooster Rock Web Site

Rooster Rock State Park is located on the gorgeous Columbia River about 25 miles east of Portland, Oregon. There is a CO beach and a nearby island (Sand Island) that is within wading distance.

DIRECTIONS: The beach is located 25 miles east of Portland along Interstate Highway 84. Take Exit 25 (Rooster Rock State Park exit), drive to the far east end of the parking lot and look for the public restroom building. A short distance east of the restrooms you will see a stairway leading down to the beach. Be sure to wear shoes! You will have a good half mile hike east through local beach growth and mud before you start running into the posted CO signs. (There is a sign on the stairs with directions to the beach).

My wife and I visited Rooster Rock in July 2001. The water was very low and a lot of beach was visible. There were lots of people mostly men and the whole experience was ruined by a couple having sex near the entrance with a group of perverts standing around watching. Please withhold my name due to the nature of my wife's job.

Carl,

I read the latest report on Rooster Rock and thought I'd like to send another report that gives a bit of a different view of Rooster Rock.

Our group of 5 from the Seattle area spent the weekend in the Portland area and visited both Sauvie Island on Saturday and Rooster Rock on Sunday. It was late May, 2000 so the days were cool, but the sun was great. It was just stopping a rain when we got to Sauvie and there weren't many people there. Almost deserted, but we still enjoyed the beach and water. The next day we went to Rooster Rock, the weather was clear blue skies and a warm sun - probably 72 degrees F. While the brush and mud are a constant irritant at Rooster Rock, we made it to the island easily by heading straight east out of the parking lot, walking under the bluffs to the lagoon, then backtracking along the beach to the tip of the island, where we crossed over in ankle deep water. The island, as usual, has vast areas clear sand, lots of space to spread out. The water in the lagoon was cool, but pleasant even that early in the season. One thing I noted that day is that the number of male/female couples were much larger than usual, and I was most happy to see 3 families with children. The brushy overgrown brushy area along the main shore did not seem to have many people at all - gay or otherwise. Honestly, I've never seen many there anyway - maybe I just don't go out of my way to "see" them.

All-in-all, I was very happy that day to see a mix of people there, and have great hopes that maybe the true naturist is once again starting to visit Rooster Rock. That is the only way we are going to reclaim - and not lose - this wonderful venue. The scenery is superb, the experience can be fantastic, the total immersion into the area is wonderfully relaxing. If RR were easier to get to, I'd chose it every time over Sauvie. Sauvie is great, easy to get to, a nice beach, but RR is the superior place. Come on people, let's start using it again. If we don't, it will continue to be taken over by brush and the undesirable elements and undesirable activities, and since the current park manager doesn't seem to be willing to administer this section of the park, someday we may find that the State of Oregon has figured out how to convert it into a textile section, and we will have lost a true treasure. Let's not let that happen. Visit Rooster Rock State Park and encourage others to do so as well.

Hi:

Stopped by Rooster Rock on Friday, July 21, 2000 and thought I'd send an update since no one appears to have commented the place since last year. Feel free to use my comments but please delete my email addy, Thanks.

We decided on Rooster Rock because it was more conveniently located to where we were than Portland's other CO beach on Sauvie Island. We went expecting a good half mile hike in to the beach. What we didn't know was that the direct to the beach trail at the base of the stairway would be under feet of muck and mud. That left us with the option of taking the longer hike by going east and then cutting over to the river through the brush, or foregoing the riverfront and hunkering down in the bushes. We opted for the latter and found a spot on the hillside off the trail. So I can't tell you anything about the riverfront conditions.

The other surprise was finding "Cock Rock" is now more gay than ever. Homophobes and others who don't want to witness male/male bonding of a sexual nature should avoid Rooster Rock. Walking in we witnessed two gay couples getting jiggy, one couple was clearly engaged in an act of anal intercourse. In fairness, we also spotted a hetero couple getting a little more friendly than nude beach etiquette dictates. In addition to the lady I was with, we only noticed two other females.

All in all, we decided in retrospect that we should have taken the extra hour to drive to the other end of town to spend our afternoon at Sauvie. The short walk to the beachfront at Collins is obviously more desireable and gays who venture away from the gay area tend to be better behaved.

One more thing, while we didn't notice the presence of mosquitoes mentioned by others, we did bring home evidence, in the form of itchy welts, that biting insects were present.

Bottom line: If you want to get nekkid in public in the Portland area, go to Sauvie Island. All in all you'll have a much better experience.

This place sucked and didn't feel good!!

It seems this is the site of the Oregon State expermental mosquito breeding farm!! The mosquito count on my fiancee's back stopped at 100.

We wasted a perfectly fine afternoon here when we could have gone to Sauvie Island. The trudge to the beach was vicious. The hike thru sand and mud was long, but that only came after running the guantlet of "bi curious" males looking for blowjobs closer to the parking lot.

We will NEVER visit this site again, unless we have the opportunity to come by boat. I would NOT recommend this to anyone else.

Hi,
Feel free to post the review, just remove my e-mail addy please. I would also like to add that I totally enjoy Collins Beach, and find it to be and excellent spot to relax and suck up the rays. I do frequent the Cooper Point beach, but it is not nearly as relaxing, as you must keep one eye out for the law, and the other out for people whom might find the sight of a nekid body offensive. Keep up the good work on the Mooncrow's Naturist Pages, I appreciate the information that you share with all of us.

I was down at rooster rock about a week ago. really sucked... got eaten alive by mosquitos, the river was way too high to make it to the island, also had to walk through a lot of muck, went back to sauvie for a wonderful afternoon.

My wife and I spend the nite on the beach, the weather was great and so was the water.

Stayed close to the boat people most of the time, they are the nicest bunch of people youd ever want to meet. We came by boat, the water is so low that it quite a walk thru the bushes to reach the water.

We decided years ago that if we ever had to walk down thru the bushes again, we would not go......a boat is the only way to do Rooster Rock right.

We spent most of our time right out by the river, the logoon seemed to be populated by all males. We did'nt have any problems, as usual, but we did notice these two black guys watching us from the bushes as we where setting our tent up (he was only 25 feet away and masturbating). They seemed to be going from group to group hoping someone would invite them in, there were no takers of course.

Rooster Rock is a favorite of ours, there is always plenty of room and lots of friendly regulars that show up.

For those that where there on "Labor Day" weekend, I was the one chasing his little red tent across the sand in the wind. [ :-) ]

We always have a good time, just wish it was closer to home (Yakima).

Just got back from visiting Rooster Rock while I was on a business Trip in Portland. I spent about 6 hours there on Sunday afternoon and 3 hours there on Monday afternoon. I hated the walk through the brush to get to the water's edge and found it to not have been worth the walk. The mosquitos were horrible, but I managed to make it through. Between the two days there were two women who shoed up...one remained clothed. I wasn't there to look at women, but I didn't expect to spend it with about 20 guys - three of whom I caught masturbating. A group of high school students showed up Monday after school (7 guys and 1 girl). They were drinking beer and smoking a little pot, but managed to swim across to the island. Everyone stood to watch them, people were too afraid they wouldn't make it there and back. The remained clothed the entire time, so I really don't know why they chose to show up where they did.

I know I am making it out to sound like a horrible experience. I really wasn't; it just wasn't as wonderful as the other nude beaches I have been to.

Review written by: Cheef (8/8/95)

My wife, Deej, and I made the trip to Rooster Rock in the June of 1995. We were not real favorably impressed with the place. The hike from the parking area to the beach is too long if you are carrying a cooler. The bugs can be real bothersome. And, the strong winds along that part of the Columbia Gorge may be great for sail boarding, but tend to whip sand everywhere. Also, with the easy nearby access to the freeway, the beach tends to attract too many gawkers. If you are going to be in the Portland area, Deej and I suggest that you visit Sauvie Island instead.
