My wife & I stopped at Wilderness Gateway campground on a bicycle tour (just the two of us) through Idaho. We hiked in to Stanley Hot Springs and camped overnight. A young cow moose was hanging around, and another couple from Washington D.C. camping near us said there was also a herd of elk that frequents the springs. A good fishing stream is just downstream from the springs; the other couple had camped for a couple of days, fishing & soaking in the buff. We camped nude & of course soaked the same way, with no one offended (there was only one older gentleman there who'd horse-packed in). It's a beautiful area, in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, with many miles of hiking trails and high-country lakes to explore.

The springs are clean, hot, and do not have a real sulfur smell.

Visited Stanley Hot Springs on 6 Oct 1996. Met troup of about 18 boy scouts (approximately 8-12 yrs old) leaving. They had been camped at hot sprongs. Glad they were gone before I arrived.

Pools ranged in temp. from 110 to 104 degrees. Had enjoyable, peaceful soak that afternoon. Looks to be good camping spots nearby, maybe next year on a visit.

Several pools located five or six miles into the forest. Campsites exist at this location as well. This series of pools make the perfect weekend getaway. The hike in keeps all but serious hot springs enthusiasts away, so you won't have to worry about offending anyone. Take FS trail 211 out of Wilderness Gateway campground for about 5 miles (uphill all the way) then go down FS 221, about 1/4 mile beyond the river crossing, you will reach heaven on earth.
